Holiday rental accommodation in the Aran Valley

The Aran Valley (Val d'Aran in Aranese) occupies the north-western tip of the Catalan Pyrenees, in the province of Lleida. It is the only valley on the north face of the mountain range that belongs to Spain, with Atlantic climate, its own language (Aranese) and a cultural identity distinct from the rest of Catalonia. The valley stretches from the French border to the Bonaigua pass, with Vielha as its capital and Baqueira Beret as the main tourist draw.

Where to stay in the Aran Valley

  • Baqueira Beret (ski resort). Spain's largest ski resort: 170 km of slopes, 36 lifts. Ski-in ski-out apartments across three zones: Baqueira 1500 (resort centre, full services), Val de Ruda (modern development with its own gondola and covered parking) and Tanau/Level 1700 (quiet residential area higher up the mountain).
  • Vielha. Capital of the Aran Valley. The widest range of services (supermarkets, pharmacy, Ice Palace, restaurants), a characterful old quarter and lower rental prices than Baqueira. 15 minutes by car from the resort. See apartments in Vielha.
  • Arties. A stone village 7 km from Baqueira. Banhs d'Arties thermal baths, the Parador hotel, Romanesque churches and a food scene that punches above its weight, including Casa Irene, one of the most respected restaurants in the valley. See accommodation in Arties.
  • Salardú. Head town of the Naut Aran municipality, 5 km from Baqueira. The Romanesque church of Sant Andreu holds 13th-century murals. A compact, quiet village with basic services. See apartments in Salardú.

Holiday rental all year round

The Aran Valley receives visitors 12 months a year. In winter, Baqueira Beret opens from November to April. In summer, the valley transforms: hiking in Aigüestortes National Park, circuits to the Colomèrs Cirque, mountain biking from Beret, thermal baths at Les, festivals and village markets. The Falles de Sant Joan (June) and the Fèsta de Hòrt (October) are two of the best-known celebrations.

The Aran Valley: nature, heritage and gastronomy

Nature. Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park (accessed via the Bonaigua pass), Colomèrs Cirque (a cluster of glacial lakes), Saut deth Pish waterfall, Artiga de Lin, Baricauba forest. A network of signposted hiking trails for all levels.

Heritage. The Aranese Romanesque route brings together over 30 churches and hermitages (11th-13th centuries) spread across the valley villages. Highlights include Sant Andreu de Salardú, Santa María de Arties, Sant Miquèu de Vielha and the church at Bossòst.

Gastronomy. Olla aranesa (mountain stew), grilled meats, wild boar civet, Aranese cheese, Aran Valley caviar. Restaurants in Vielha, Arties (Casa Irene, Parador), Baqueira and other villages throughout the valley.

Getting to the Aran Valley

Access via the N-230 and the Vielha tunnel. Driving distances: Toulouse 277 km (3 h), Barcelona 280 km (3 h 30 min), Zaragoza 263 km (3 h), Madrid 585 km (6 h). Nearest airports: Toulouse-Blagnac (2 h 45 min drive) and Lleida-Alguaire (2 h). High-speed rail (AVE) connection at Lleida with Madrid and Barcelona.

For French travellers, Toulouse is the natural gateway. The A64 motorway leads to Montréjeau, then the N-230 follows the Garonne valley (the river rises in the Aran Valley) through the Vielha tunnel. Access roads are kept clear of snow throughout the ski season.

For British and Northern European visitors, the most practical route is flying into Toulouse-Blagnac and renting a car. Barcelona El Prat is an alternative (3 h 30 min drive) with a wider choice of flights.
