Bassa d’Arres and Mina Victòria, a perfect excursion
https://almadenieve.com/news/N3185F0x1400.jpgOne of the options available in the Aran Valley is hiking. In this case, we offer a simple route that you can enjoy with the family while discovering the mining history of the region. It includes two different itineraries that you can choose depending on your plans for the day, and it will immerse you in a unique natural environment. Discover Bassa d’Arres and Mina Victòria on your trip to the Aran Valley and during your stay in Alma de Nieve apartments.
The characteristics of the route
With low difficulty, the trails are wide and comfortable to walk on. Along the route, there is a positive elevation gain of 382 meters through gentle slopes. In terms of total distance, you can choose the short option of just three kilometers, which is a circular route, or add another two and a half kilometers along an out-and-back path.
The route is accessible all year round, although it is best to avoid the snowy season and enjoy it during the summer months to make the most of it. Its layout is perfect for families with children, allowing everyone to enjoy the charm of this magical place.
Starting points
Since there are two route options, there are two different starting points. The first is the village of Arres de Sus, specifically in the main square, for the longer route. You can easily park in the village before starting the hike. The second starting point is next to the lake, located along the same road as the village, and also has a parking area. Both options are ideal for exploring the area—you just need to choose the distance you want to walk.
Discovering the route
Along the longer route, you will discover the mining tradition and natural charm of the Aran region. Starting in the village, you will see the trail sign next to the washhouse, and after passing the church, you will reach the fields. Meadows and pastures are the first scenery you will see as you slowly ascend, with views toward the natural border with France.
After passing through a red pine forest, you will reach a junction where the circular part of the route begins and connects with the shorter option. From here, you head toward Mina Victoria through another forest of pines and firs. Enjoy nature and breathe in the scent of the trees, especially in spring.
One of the most interesting points of the route is the mining area. Here you can see an old foreman’s house and the mine entrance, which is closed to the public, although visits can be requested at the Interpretation Center. The remains of the railway and old mine carts will guide you to the core of the site, the so-called engine room. After the final stop at the miners’ house, you continue toward the Arres lake (Bassa d’Arres).
This section is one of the narrowest, so extra care should be taken with children, although it is generally safe. After passing more parts of the mining site, you will reach the lake, where you can eat and rest before returning to the first junction and heading back to the village along the same path.
The lake of Arres and Mina Victoria route is an excellent way to discover the Aran Valley, especially in the summer months. Alma de Nieve tourist apartments are the best option to explore the area while enjoying a comfortable stay.
