Do you want to discover another unique village located in the Aran Valley? In this Alma de Nieve article, we are going to talk about Arrés de Jos, a magical place where you can get lost during your visit to this area.

Where is Arrés de Jos

Located at 1,276 meters of altitude and with only 68 inhabitants, this village has a unique setting that makes it a very interesting visit in the valley. It is situated in the Uishera mountains, on the right side of the Garona River. It stands out as one of the oldest villages in the area and is divided into two parts: Arrés de Jos and Arrés de Sus. We guarantee that the landscapes surrounding these villages will leave you speechless!

How to get there

If you start from accommodation in Baqueira, it will take you about 40 minutes by car to reach Arrés. To get there, you must follow the C-28 road that passes through Vielha, another wonderful village in the area. It is not difficult to find the village by following the signs, but we recommend going early to make the most of your day.

For parking, the best option is to leave your car in Arrés de Sus and then continue on foot, enjoying the landscapes and most iconic spots in the area. Don’t forget your camera or smartphone, as you will surely want to capture some moments!

Must-see places you should not miss

There are some essential places you must visit in this beautiful village of the Aran Valley. Here are the ones we consider most important.

The church of Sant Fabian

This is one of the most important spots in Arrés and you should not miss it during your stay. This 11th-century Romanesque church has a special charm that leaves no one indifferent.

It is one of the oldest churches in the valley and, although it is not very large, it is very impressive. Its design consists of a single nave covered with a vault. Its best feature is its preservation, as its stones have withstood the passage of time and the harsh weather conditions of the area. During your visit, don’t miss the western wall, where you can see a Roman stele with three interesting busts.

The church of Sant Joan

This church is located right in the middle of the village, between Arrés de Jos and Arrés de Sus. You will find this 13th-century Romanesque building in a rather isolated hillside location, which makes its surroundings even more beautiful. It is made up of two naves: one housing the church itself and the other including the striking bell tower.

Its cobbled streets

Without a doubt, one of the things you must do in Arrés is to wander through its streets without a fixed direction. You will enjoy its stone buildings and narrow cobbled streets. We can already tell you that there are beautiful corners perfect for photography and for taking home a unique memory.

As you can see, Arrés de Jos has a lot to offer and is an ideal village to visit on a morning or afternoon excursion. Remember that the Aran Valley offers many magical routes and places to discover, and staying in the area is a great option thanks to its location.
