Enjoying the gastronomy of the Aran Valley is one of the things you should not miss during your visit to this beautiful area of Aragon. Do you want to discover one of its most classic dishes? In this article, we will talk about truhada, a traditional recipe you must try during your stay. Let’s get started!

What is truhada?

To give you an idea, truhada is a typical dish from the Aran Valley very similar to traditional mashed potatoes. The best thing about this recipe is that it can be eaten on its own or used as a side dish to accompany other local products such as wild boar stew or duck confit.

Why this dish is so traditional

This traditional Aragonese recipe is very typical because, years ago, potatoes were a cheap and easily accessible ingredient. For this reason, the locals of the valley created different preparations using this food. Truhada has survived over time and is still commonly prepared in many homes and can even be found in many high-quality restaurants in this beautiful region.

The recipe for this traditional dish

This recipe is very easy to prepare. You can make it at home whenever you want after your stay in the valley, allowing you to remember the places you visited every time you cook it.

To make it perfect, below you will find all the ingredients and step-by-step instructions. Don’t forget to take note.

Ingredients

The ingredients are inexpensive and you probably already have them in your pantry. For 2 people, you will need:

  • 4 medium potatoes
  • Milk (preferably whole milk)
  • Water
  • Salt

How to prepare it

Now for the important part: how do you prepare truhada?

Although it is a simple dish, it has a few tricks that make it a more special purée than others. The first step is to place the potatoes in a pot and cover them completely with water so they cook properly.

Add salt to taste, but do not be shy with it to ensure maximum flavour. Cooking the potatoes will take around 15 to 18 minutes. To check if they are ready, pierce them with a fork—when it goes in and out easily, they are perfectly cooked. Drain the water but leave the potatoes in the pot.

Now comes the key step: to achieve the texture typical of this Aran Valley dish, add milk and let the potatoes cook in it for a couple of minutes. This is what makes the purée creamy and delicious.

After that, simply mash the potatoes. You can use a fork in the traditional way. Keep mashing until you get a smooth mixture with no lumps or large pieces. And that’s it—enjoy!

Truhada is one of the dishes you must try during your visit to the valley. It will surely become one of your favourite traditional recipes, proving that delicious food does not need to be complicated. Stay in accommodation in the Aran Valley, ideally located to explore different parts of the area. Adventure and great gastronomy await you!
