The Marxa Beret is, without a doubt, the most established Nordic skiing race held anywhere in Spain. Organized by the Conselh Generau d’Aran and Baqueira Beret, it is the most traditional snow marathon in the Catalan Pyrenees and the flagship event of all winter cross-country skiing competitions. This annual event is much more than a race, as it brings together not only licensed athletes but also amateur skiers who want to enjoy a true skiing festival with family and friends.

History of the Marxa Beret

Did you know that this cross-country skiing race has been held in Baqueira Beret, in the Val d’Aran, since 1978? Since then, every first weekend of February, hundreds of skiers gather to take part in a marathon that has grown year after year in both participation and prestige.

Its tradition and reputation have made it part of the FIS Euroloppet circuit, a world tour that includes other renowned events such as Engadin in Switzerland, Vasaloppet in Sweden, and Marcia Longa in Italy.

A curious fact: the record number of participants was reached in 1995, with a total of 1,752 skiers.

A race divided into three categories

The Marxa Beret is divided into three categories. The main race, 42 km classic (CL), is designed for experienced skiers with a license. The middle distance, 21 km CL, is aimed at intermediate athletes. The shortest distance, 10 km CL, is open to all levels, especially beginners.

The 44th edition will take place in 2024 during the weekend of February 3rd and 4th. It is a major winter sports celebration where organizers expect to exceed previous participation records.

The program includes the Spanish Sprint Championship at Pla de Beret on Saturday, February 3rd. The 42 km, 21 km, and 10 km CL races will be held on Sunday, February 4th.

This year, the Marxa Beret introduces a new feature: the Mini Marxa Beret, designed for children and beginners who want to experience cross-country skiing for the first time.

Registration can be completed through the official website or in person at the Polivalent Center in Vielha. There is even a category for participants over 70 years old, showing that the event is open to all ages and levels.

Current champions

Marta Cester and Lander Martin won the 43rd edition of the Marxa Beret in 2023 over the 42 km distance, also becoming Spanish champions in long-distance classic style skiing. For the young skier from Navarre, it was his first victory in this iconic Pyrenean marathon, while for the skier from the Val d’Aran it marked her fifth consecutive win.
