What to see in Arrós, village in the Aran Valley
https://almadenieve.com/news/N3219F0x1400.jpgArrós (Arròs in Aranese) is a village of around 200 inhabitants at 967 metres above sea level, 5 km from Vielha along the Varradòs road. It belongs to the municipality of Vielha e Mijaran. Streets lined with stone-and-slate houses, a historical archive dating from the 14th century, the old school museum and a Gothic church with the only octagonal bell tower in the Aran Valley.
From Arrós the track leads to the Saut deth Pish waterfall, one of the most accessible and photographed excursions in the valley. A small village that concentrates heritage and history, and serves as the gateway to the Val de Varradòs.
Church of Santa Eulàlia
The church of Santa Eulàlia is the most distinctive building in Arrós. It dates from the 14th century, in transitional Gothic style. Its defining feature is the octagonal bell tower with a flat roof, unique in the entire Aran Valley. Every other church in the valley has a square tower or bell gable, making Santa Eulàlia an exception visible from the road.
The bell tower has six storeys. At the top, an opening on each of its eight faces where several original bells are preserved. The church consists of a single nave with a groin vault and four side chapels added after the original construction. Inside, a Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century and a Gothic silver processional cross.
It forms part of the Aran Valley Romanesque route, although its style is more Gothic than Romanesque.
Archive of the Conselh Generau d'Aran
Arrós houses the public archive of the Aran Valley, located in the Casa Señorial Ademar (built in 1820 by Francisco Ademà Subirà). It forms part of the Generalitat de Catalunya archive network and holds documentation from the 14th to the 21st century.
Visitors can access the collections in person: Conselh minutes, historical maps, documents on the administration of the valley over the centuries. An attraction for anyone looking to explore the history of the Aran Valley in depth. The facade of the manor house deserves a stop in its own right.
Old School Museum
Arrós preserves a replica of the two schools the village had until they closed in the 1975 school year. Students now attend school in Vielha. Inside the building, the original desks, blackboards and school materials recreate what classrooms looked like in a rural Aranese school in the 20th century.
Washhouse and trough
On the Calle Mayor stands the old washhouse, built in stone with slate roofs. It was the meeting point where villagers did their laundry and shared news. Next to it, the trough where livestock drank. Both are well preserved and an example of functional Aranese architecture.
Chapel of El Pilar
On the outskirts of Arrós, heading towards the Val de Varradòs, stands the Chapel of El Pilar. A small hermitage surrounded by meadows that marks the start of the track to the Saut deth Pish.
Saut deth Pish waterfall
The Saut deth Pish waterfall is one of the most popular excursions in the Aran Valley and is accessed from Arrós. The paved track starts at Pont d'Arrós and follows the river Varradòs for 11 km. You can drive to a signposted car park.
The waterfall is a drop of over 12 metres. Its waters come from Lac Long, in the Siesso forest. The walk from the car park is short and easy, suitable for families with children. In summer, the pools beside the waterfall allow bathing.
Pont d'Arrós
Pont d'Arrós is a hamlet of Arrós situated by the bridge over the river Garonne. It is the point where the road turns off towards the Val de Varradòs and the Saut deth Pish. Some searches treat Pont d'Arrós as a separate village, but it forms part of the same settlement.
