The Aran Valley is an ideal place to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature through little-known paths. One of the most interesting routes is the one that leads to the Tuc de Betlan peak.

Tuc de Betlan, a journey that invites you to reach the summit

The Tuc de Betlan mountain is considered a very enjoyable adventure for hikers. This 2,141-metre peak, located in the municipality of Canejan, offers a medium-level difficulty route through the Torán Valley. It is a relatively accessible hike despite the altitude of the summit.

This excursion can be done as a family, as long as the children are a bit older (from around seven years old). To enjoy the landscape and take proper precautions, it is best to walk at a relaxed pace and take time to breathe in the fresh air. It is recommended to ascend through different trails and meadows up to 2,141 metres. During the route, which takes approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes, you will need to overcome an elevation gain of around 800 metres to reach the summit.

Route description

Throughout the hike, walkers have the opportunity to discover one of the most remote areas of the Aran Valley. On the right side of the Garonne River lies this area, characterised by peaceful forests and little-used paths leading to small settlements:

  • The starting and finishing point is the Refugio dera Honeria. A forest track connects to this shelter, but you must take the right-hand fork to stay on the correct route and be careful halfway along, as the terrain becomes quite rocky.
  • The Liera Mala path is not signposted, so special attention is required along this five-kilometre stretch. Parking is not easy in this area, but you can continue until the track becomes wider.
  • From the same refuge, you should follow the GR-211-3 route to avoid unnecessary detours. You will pass through Gotèrs de Bredreda, Comatroja and Arbaet until you reach a path that climbs steeply to the left. To avoid getting lost, it is best to exit the forest clearing from Es Cobos, heading south.
  • Since it is easy to lose the path, it is recommended to continue intuitively along the Sèrra de Peirahita, which corresponds to the north-facing slope of the Tuc de Betlan.
  • Along the route, you will notice that the ridge leading to the summit gradually becomes wider. However, you should not lose sight of the steep western slope of the ridge, as the views open up dramatically towards the Tuc de Betlan, a magnificent viewpoint.
  • Without a doubt, you will be amazed by this wild alpine landscape. If this is your first excursion, it is advisable to descend and return via the same route.
