What to see in Benós?
https://almadenieve.com/news/N3238F0x1400.jpgIn the heart of the majestic Aran Valley, nestled between snow-capped peaks and lush forests, lies the small village of Benós, a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its rural charm and rich history. Far from the crowds and hustle and bustle, Benós offers a peaceful and authentic retreat, where life moves at a slow pace in harmony with nature.
This village is part of the so-called terçon of Lairissa, a traditional and historically preserved territorial division of the Aran Valley made up of seven villages: Arres de Jos, Arres de Sus, Arró, Begòs, and Es Bòrdes, as well as Benós itself. All of them are connected through a shared itinerary and share cultural, natural, and geographical similarities. In fact, it is possible to complete a walking route through the seven villages of the terçon, which takes around 4 hours, starting in the church square of Es Bòrdes and ending in the main square of Benós, from where a path leads back again to Es Bòrdes.
A tiny village of just 24 inhabitants
With only 24 residents, Benós preserves the essence of a traditional Pyrenean village, located about 10 km from Vielha, the capital of the Aran Valley. Its cobbled streets, lined with stone and wood houses with slate roofs, transport visitors to a past filled with stories and legends. The Romanesque church of Sant Martí, dating back to the 12th century, stands as a silent witness to the passage of time, while the chapel of Sant Joan, located on the outskirts of the village, offers stunning panoramic views of the valley.
Beyond its architecture, Benós enchants visitors with its exceptional natural surroundings. Surrounded by mountains covered in forests, meadows, and crystal-clear rivers, the village is a paradise for hiking, cycling, and fishing enthusiasts.
During the winter months, snow transforms the landscape into a fairytale setting, ideal for cross-country skiing or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of the mountain winter. But Benós is not only about outdoor activities. The village also has a rich culture and traditions celebrated throughout the year.
Feast in honor of Sant Martí
The main village festival, in honor of Sant Martí, is held in November and attracts visitors from across the region with its music, dances, and traditional cuisine. Other popular celebrations include the pilgrimage to the chapel of Sant Joan in June and the celebration of the summer solstice.
For those seeking an authentic gastronomic experience, Benós offers traditional local cuisine, including dishes such as olla aranesa, which you should not miss.
