The waterfalls of the Aran Valley are much more than just a beautiful spot for a photo: they are small treasures hidden among the mountains, routes that connect you with nature in an authentic way and moments that stay with you forever.
If you are planning your getaway to this corner of the Pyrenees, we suggest 5 waterfalls that are absolutely worth discovering. Some are very accessible, others will make you walk a bit more, but all of them have something special. Keep reading and take note!
Sauth deth Pish waterfall: the most spectacular
We start with the most famous one, yes, but no less essential. The Sauth deth Pish waterfall is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive in the Aran Valley. It is located in the Varradòs Valley, about 20 km from Vielha. The access is well signposted, and in summer you can reach the parking area by car. From there, a wooden walkway and a short path take you right to the base of the waterfall.
The main drop is over 20 meters high, and right next to it you will find a second smaller waterfall, equally charming. There is a picnic area, viewpoints and paths that allow you to extend your visit if you feel like exploring further. It is ideal for: families, children, photographers and anyone looking for an easy and very visual excursion.
Carlac waterfalls in Bausen: nature with history
In the northwest of the Aran Valley, almost on the French border, lies Bausen, a small village full of charm. From there, a very pleasant route starts, through meadows and beech forests, leading you to a quiet and secluded waterfall.
But beyond the waterfall, this walk has another highlight: the story of Teresa, a young woman from the village whose grave, located in the middle of the forest, symbolizes a beautiful story of love and rebellion. The route is signposted, circular and perfect for a morning of disconnection. It is ideal for: relaxed walkers, lovers of charming villages and those who enjoy discovering stories.
Uelhs deth Joèu waterfall: the mystery of water
Here things get interesting. The Uelhs deth Joèu (“Eyes of the Devil” in Aranese) is a spectacular water spring that bursts powerfully from the rocks. The surroundings are stunning, but what really makes it special is its origin: it is said that part of the water that falls in the Forau d’Aigualluts, in the nearby Benasque Valley, disappears underground and resurfaces kilometers later… right here.
It is located at the end of the Artiga de Lin Valley, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the area, and access is very easy thanks to the tourist train (in summer) or a comfortable walk. It’s a perfect excursion: easy route, spectacular views and legends that add a magical touch.
Ideal for: everyone, including non-skiers and off-season travelers.
Salt d’Arbaet waterfall: a hidden spot between Arties and Gessa
This is one of those routes that feels tailor-made to disconnect without going too far. Salt d’Arbaet is a lesser-known waterfall, but with a very special charm.
The path is simple and well signposted, just about 30 minutes from Arties to reach this waterfall surrounded by untouched nature.
The sound of the water and the surrounding landscape make it a perfect stop for those looking for a peaceful walk with a rewarding view.
Also, being so close to some accommodations, you can include this excursion as part of your day without much planning.
Ideal for: slow travelers, those who enjoy quiet experiences and discovering less crowded places.
Molieres waterfall: for those seeking adventure
We finish with a route that requires a bit more effort, but it’s absolutely worth it. The Molieres waterfall is located in the Aigüestortes National Park, near the Vielha tunnel, and is accessed via a mountain trail that gradually climbs to a spectacular spot.
The waterfall has several drops, with an impressive final fall that seems to emerge directly from the rock. It’s a route for those who enjoy hiking, disconnecting and discovering lesser-known places.
Ideal for: hikers looking for pure nature and breathtaking views.
Stay nearby and explore at your own pace
One of the advantages of staying in the Aran Valley is being close to everything. From accommodations in Baqueira, Gessa, Bagergue or Val de Ruda, you can easily access all these routes, whether during ski season or not.
You can combine a morning of waterfalls with an afternoon of relaxation, a scenic dinner or even a short excursion without much planning. Because the Aran Valley is much more than snow, and discovering it at your own pace is part of its charm.
The Aran Valley is full of magical waterfalls, hidden in forests, next to charming villages or in landscapes that seem taken from a storybook. Some are easy to reach, others require more effort, but all will leave you with the feeling of having discovered something unique.
So now you know: pack your boots, bring your camera and add a waterfall route to your trip.
