Restanca Refuge route: complete guide

Located in the heart of the Pyrenees, the Aran Valley is one of the most appreciated destinations for hikers. Its network of mountain trails, diverse landscapes and preserved nature make it an ideal place for trekking. Among all the routes, one stands out for its beauty and accessibility: the hike to Restanca Refuge.

Route to Restanca Refuge

The Restanca Refuge (2,010 m) is a key point in many routes within the Aigüestortes National Park. The access starts from Pont deth Ressec, near Arties, following a well-marked trail suitable for different levels.

The route begins at the Pont deth Ressec parking area (1,400 m). The path follows a marked trail and allows a safe and progressive ascent.

The trail goes through the Baricauba forest, offering shade for much of the journey. As you gain altitude, the forest gives way to alpine meadows and rocky terrain until reaching the Restanca lake dam.

From there, a short final ascent leads to the refuge, with stunning views of the lake and surrounding peaks such as Montardo (2,833 m).

  • Total distance (round trip): approx. 7.5 km
  • Elevation gain: 600 m
  • Maximum altitude: 2,010 m
  • Estimated duration: 2.5 to 3.5 hours (ascent)

The refuge offers basic services and is a starting point for other routes such as Carros de Foc or the ascent to Montardo.

Difficulty level

The route is considered moderate. It does not include technical sections, but requires a reasonable level of fitness due to the elevation gain.

The trail is well marked and suitable for hikers with some experience or families with children used to walking.

In spring, snow may still be present in higher areas. Proper equipment is recommended depending on the season.

There are no drinking water sources along the route, so carrying enough water is essential.

Other routes from Arties

The area around Arties offers many hiking options of varying difficulty.

  • Montardo ascent: a challenging climb to one of the most iconic peaks.
  • Estanh de Mar and Estanh de Rius: a scenic route connecting glacial lakes.
  • Artiga de Lin and Uelhs deth Joèu: accessible natural highlights.
  • Colomers route: for more experienced hikers seeking longer routes.

Enjoy the Aran Valley

After a day in the mountains, having a comfortable place to rest is essential.

The Aran Valley offers the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation, making it an ideal destination for hiking lovers.
