If you have ever visited the Aran Valley, you have probably crossed an impressive tunnel through the mountains. But do you know when it was built and how it improved access to the valley? Here’s everything you need to know.
The Vielha Tunnel: a key infrastructure in the Aran Valley
The Vielha Tunnel is a vital road infrastructure connecting the Aran Valley with the rest of Catalonia and Spain. Located in the Pyrenees, it crosses the mountain range and ensures access to the valley throughout the year.
Today, the tunnel consists of two galleries: the original one, opened in 1948, and the modern tunnel, in operation since 2007. With a length of over five kilometers, it is one of the longest mountain tunnels in the Iberian Peninsula and a key element in the valley’s economic and tourism development.
Its history
Before the tunnel was built, access to the Aran Valley was extremely difficult, especially in winter. Heavy snowfall and the altitude of the Bonaigua pass often left the valley isolated for long periods.
Construction of the first tunnel began in 1939 and was completed in 1948. This infrastructure marked a turning point, providing a permanent connection with surrounding regions.
For decades, this was the only road access to the valley. However, over time, its limitations in terms of safety and capacity became evident as traffic increased.
In 1999, the construction of a new tunnel began, and it was inaugurated in 2007. The modern tunnel offers improved safety, ventilation and capacity. The old tunnel is now used for emergency and maintenance purposes.
Main benefits of the tunnel

The tunnel guarantees access to the Aran Valley 365 days a year, eliminating the isolation caused by harsh winter conditions.
